Sad or Thankful?

What? Two blog updates in the same week? Oh my gosh has this guy gone crazy?! Ok, enough of my sarcasm. I've heard from several people that the wish I updated more frequently. I put pressure on myself to make sure all my posts are funny and entertaining. I'm also trying to figure out what this blog is about. Just how much of myself do I really want to reveal here? Those who know me know that I'm an open book. But that's just it, it's those who know me. Anyway I'll get it all figured out sooner or later.
So two main things I want to write about. One is karaoke in Alaska and the other is my friend Jan visiting and going to the International Ice Carving Festival. I think I'll go with that one first.

I've known Jan for like 12 or 13 years when we worked together for Holland America. Now she's a flight attendant for my favorite airline, Alaska. (I'm a complete whore for my Alaska Airline miles!) Anyway, she flew up this weekend for work and we got to spend a few hours together on Sunday. It was so out of context for both of us to meet up here. We are so used to seeing one another in Seattle that to spend time together here in Fairbanks is funny. But as always it was awesome to see her. She is such a kind-hearted person and I always feel so much better about myself after talking with her, not like my other friends who make me feel like crap! Ok, just kidding on that!

Anyway we went to the International Ice Carving Festival. It is the premier ice carving festival and if you are anyone who is someone in the ice carving world you come here. It is a month long event that lasts pretty much until the carvings melt. There is a single block competition and a multi-block competition as well as amateur competitions, etc. They also have stuff for kids to play on, tops to spin around in and slides to slide down. When we went only the single block carvings were done and they were just getting started on the multi-blocks. I plan to go back in a couple of weeks and take some pictures. They light them up at night and they look pretty spectacular. I'm excited to see them when they are done. Several of the businesses around town have carvings done that they have out during the winter. It's all pretty cool. The pic is of Jan at one of the blocks. It was pretty funny. I forgot my camera (of course) and had to use my cell phone camera. Sorry Jan!! Our visit finished with a latte and a chai tea at one of the local coffee houses to warm up and catch up. It was a great way to finish up our visit and I look forward to Jan being in town again.

Ok, now for the karaoke....there is a dive bar that has karaoke on Friday and Saturday nights. Hmm, did that even need saying? Dive bar that has karaoke? Are there non-dive bars that do karaoke? I guess I've just never been to them. Anyway, this place is very empty so if you go there, you can pretty much sing to your heart's content. Kimmy Gibbler (ok, not her real name...tho her name is Kim I just like to call her Kimmy Gibbler), Rene and Missy all wanted to go there Friday night. I was pooped and wanted to stay in but I met them out. There were all of five other people in the bar other than us. Other than the girls singing, there were two other guys there who were going up and singing pretty regularly. And I actually sang a couple of songs. One of my favs is MMMM MMMM MMMM MMMM by Crash Test Dummies. Anyone can fake their way through that one. But I also sang I'm Too Sexy by Right Said Fred. That was freaking HIGH-larious! Missy heckled me and then had to come up on stage and sing with me. Then we did a most awesome duet of Love Shack by the B-52s. That one was a lot of fun!

Well, about 1am people started showing up. I have no idea what is so magical about 1am but they started coming in in droves and I didn't really want to be there. But a few interesting things happened before I left. There was a group of four women (mostly in their 40s) and and guy (in his 20s) who came in. Apparently the guy was dating one of the skanky older women. That is one thing I've noticed about here....the very odd pairings that you see. You can see the hottest guy ever with the absolute bitchiest, nastiest, skankiest girl. No idea on that one. It's odd for sure.

Then miss I'm so drunk shows up. I have no idea who she arrived with but she was sooooooo drunk. So drunk to the point that it's more sad than funny. She was going up to every one and hanging on them and talking to them. I was getting uncomfortable to I decided it was time for me to take my leave. As I was walking out, I kept weaving around through the tables and she kept stepping into my path. Finally she gets in front of me puts her arms around and says "Hey, are you trying to avoid me?" I'm completely mortified and was trying to be nice and just said I was just trying not to run her over and she laughed and then hugged me and didn't really want to let go. Are you freaking kidding me?! Is she really trying to hit on me?!?! Somehow I was able to escape her clutches and left with what little dignity one could have when leaving a place like that. Sheesh!! But, the story gets better....

So this is second hand information...it happened after I left. A group of younger guys arrived and were on stage singing. Miss I'm so drunk I tried to pick up a gay guy goes on stage with the group of guys. She gets down on her knees and proceeds to pull down one of the guy's pants and underwear and um, starts playing with him!!! On stage, in front of a bar that is rapidly filling up. Holy crapola! I don't know whether to be sad that I missed it or thankful I got out of there when I did.
